Fire Safety!

Matt's class was recently talking about the helpers in our community and on the day they talked about Firemen and fire safety the teacher reminded us parents to talk to with our kids about different ways to get out of the house and pick a meeting spot for the family. (Thank goodness the teachers do these things as we probably would have never discussed this as a family). So that night during dinner we talked about where we should meet in the event our house was on fire. Matt suggested that we meet by the fire truck. I could just see the little boy excitement in his eyes thinking about how cool it would be that a fire truck would be at our house just for us! And while that might be an obvious place to meet, we've decided that the neighbor's tree might be a better place and also out of the way. Hopefully we never need to meet at the tree.

Conference Report

I recently attended conferences for both Drew and Matt and walked away from both conferences proud. Hopefully this trend will continue each and every year.

Drew's teacher said he is a pleasure to have in class, has perfect behavior and that his classmates are drawn to him and that he is a leader. And as one of the youngest in his class I'll always be concerned that he is "on track" with his peers and again she said he is right where he should be. She shared some of his recent work with me so I thought I would share this with you. I think at age 5 he can draw better than I can. As you can see he has drawn a picture of a park and and then written the sentance "In spring I see park." I'm amazed at how much he has learned in the past 7 months, he wants to know how to spell everything, is writing short sentances, adding and subtracting and is even reading books like Green Eggs and Ham. I wonder what they'll be doing next year?

At Matt's conference his teacher talked about how smart he is for such a young age and she can't believe that he is one of the youngest in his class. He was more slow to engage socially in class, but has really made leaps and bounds this year. I know he has also learned a lot this year as well he just doen't show it as much. I love this picture that he recently made in school, and it makes me really happy that it has a smile - he obviously likes school more than he sometimes likes me to think.

Spring has Sprung

Growing up with 3 brothers on a farm, my mom used to say that her first trip the ER was her sign that summer had arrived. Well the Mulcahy boys have officially announced that spring has sprung - ironically on the first official day of spring. While this didn't require a trip to the ER it did look pretty nasty. Within an hour he was back to his normal self and as you can see from the photo I think he is pretty proud of his "hurt picture" as he calls it.

And for those of you curious he was playing on some logs in the back yard and slipped and obviously skinned his face.
